Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team (4-14) suffered its fourth loss in a row on Tuesday (Jan. 17) to the Utah Valley State Wolverines (7-10), 73-67, in Orem, UT.

The Wolverines dominated the first half of play, due in large part to the play of freshman Robyn Fairbanks, who scored 21 of her 32 points in the first stanza. Fairbanks was 7-11 in half and accounted for half of her team's 42 points.

UTPA bounced back in the second half and closed the gap to seven with 9:16 left to play. The Lady Broncs then connected on three three-pointers in a row, two of which were from Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.), to take a two-point advantage with 7:05 on the clock. However, UVSC was able to regain the lead at 5:01 and did not surrender the lead the rest of the way.

Winfrey led the Lady Broncs in scoring off the bench, scoring 15 points on 5-9 shooting in just 13 minutes on the court. She was 3-6 from behind the three-point arc and also accumulated two steals and two assists.

Robin Garrett (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) had another solid game with 12 points, after posting a career-high 13 points against Northern Colorado two days earlier. Garrett shot 40 percent from the field.

MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) and Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) were the other two Lady Broncs to score in double-digits. Daniel scored 11 points and was one rebound away from a double-double, with nine. Reed knocked down 4-9 shots for 10 points along with six rebounds and four assists.

UTPA shot 44 percent from the field while the Wolverines hit 45 percent of their shots. The Lady Broncs out-rebounded UVSC, 36-34, but were undone by fouls, committing seven more than their opponents and sending them to the line for 30 free throw attempts. The Wolverines hit 70 percent (21-30) of their shots from the charity stripe while UTPA was 63 percent (12-19).

The Lady Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse on Saturday (Jan. 21) when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders for a 7:00 p.m. game.
