Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team (4-16) dropped its mid-week contest against the Wichita State Shockers (11-7) on Tuesday (Jan. 31) in Wichita, KS, 72-59.
The Lady Broncs kept the game close in the opening minutes, holding a 10-9 lead at the 14:15 mark, but fell behind as the first half progressed. An 8-0 Shocker run extended the Wichita State lead to 10 points with five minutes left in the half. The Shockers took a 37-27 lead in to the locker room.
The Lady Broncs came out in the second half and trailed by 12 before going on a huge 13-0 run to take a one-point advantage over the Shockers, 44-43, with 10 minutes left to play. Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) played a key role in the UTPA run, hitting three shots from behind the three-point line for nine of the 13 points. The Lady Bronc lead was short lived as Wichita State regained the lead on the very next possession and held it the rest of the game.
Junior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) led the Lady Broncs in scoring with 16 points on 7-12 shooting from the field. Daniel also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while blocking two shots and recording one steal in 33 minutes on the court.
Montague provided a spark off the bench for the Lady Broncs, connecting on 4-4 from behind the three-point arc in the second half and was 4-5 from the field for 12 points. Freshman post Robin Garrett (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) turned in an eight-point performance in the losing effort. Garrett also grabbed seven rebounds for the Lady Broncs.
The Lady Broncs were consistent shooting on the night, connecting on 39 percent in the first half and 42 percent in the second half. The Shockers made 47 percent of their shots on the night and 33 percent from behind the three-point line.
The two teams were about even in rebounds and turnovers, with Wichita State holding a slight advantage in both categories. The Shockers out-rebounded the Lady Broncs 34-33 and turned the ball over three less times.
Three players scored in double-digits for Wichita State, including Kiki Stephens who scored a game-high 21 points on 8-15 shooting. Lexee McDonnell and Antionette Wells both recorded double-doubles (points-rebounds) for the Shockers.
The Lady Broncs return to the Rio Grande Valley for a four-game home-stand that begins with IPFW on Saturday (Feb. 4) in the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
