The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team played one of its best and toughest matches of the season on the road at The University of Texas at San Antonio, but in the end, the Roadrunners were able to escape with a five-set victory on Tuesday (Oct. 10).
UTSA struck first in the match as the Roadrunners were able to score the 30-20 decision in the first set where they posted a strong offensive performance with a .344 hitting percentage compared to .167 for the Lady Broncs. However - UTPA was able to recover in the second frame as the Lady Broncs squeezed out a 30-28 decision to even up the score at 1-1.
The Roadrunners took a 2-1 advantage over the Lady Broncs in the third frame as they notched a 30-26 decision at the UTSA Convocation Center, but UTPA was able to force a fifth and final game as they pulled out a 30-24 decision in the fourth frame.
The final match proved to be back and forth, hard fought decision that was eventually pulled out by the Roadrunners as UTSA snuck away with the 16-14 triumph en route to upping their record to 11-10 on the season.
Victoria Prior was the top offensive powerhouse for the Roadrunners on Tuesday evening as the UTSA outside hitter notched a career-high 26 kills to go along with a .457 hitting percentage. She was also the lone Roadrunner to notch a double-double in the match as she finished with 11 digs.
Brittany Hildebrand collected 18 kills and nine digs while DeeDee Strickland dished out a team-high 50 assists to go along with eight digs. Erin McMillan and Audrey Hiser each notched double-digit kill-performances as the duo finished with 22 and 15 digs, respectively.
The Roadrunners held several advantages over the Lady Broncs in the five-set victory as they posted higher numbers in kills (76-66), hitting percentage (.214-.158), assists (70-64), digs (82-77) and total blocks (12.0-10.0).
Senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) led the Lady Broncs as the UTPA outside hitter finished with 24 kills and 13 digs on the evening for her 12th double-double (kills-digs) of the season. Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) also posted a double-double for the Lady Broncs as the sophomore notched 18 kills and 10 digs for the Valley's squad.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted the sixth 60-plus assist-performance of her career as the UTPA setter dished out a season-high 64 assists on the evening to go along with 10 digs for her 10th double-double of her sophomore campaign.
Monique Schaal (Twin Falls, ID/College of Southern Idaho) had one of her top offensive performances of her first season against the Roadrunners as the UTPA middle blocker notched 10 kills along with a .368 hitting percentage while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched a career-high with 31 digs on the evening.
The Lady Broncs dropped their record to 4-18 on the season and will be back in action in Fort Worth, TX, on Saturday (Oct. 14) against Mountain West Conference-foe TCU.
