The University of Texas-Pan American dropped its seventh straight match as the Lady Broncs fell to South Dakota State on the road in three sets (30-14, 30-27, 30-16) in Brookings, SD, on Friday (Oct. 20) evening.
The Jackrabbits posted the highest hitting percentage against the Lady Broncs this season as South Dakota State finished with a .442 hitting percentage with 53 kills and seven errors in 104 total attempts. The Jackrabbits never finished below .405 for the match and recorded a .533 hitting percentage in the first frame, which was the highest mark in a game against UTPA this season as well.
Senior Amy Anderson continued to be a thorn in the side of the Lady Broncs this season as the Jackrabbits middle blocker finished with 12 kills to go along with a .667 hitting percentage. In all three matches this season, Anderson has led the Jackrabbits in kills and has recorded a .400 hitting percentage or higher.
Kristina Martin and Laura Slagter finished with 11 and 10 kills in the match for the Jackrabbits and posted hitting percentages of .524 and .450, respectively. Senior Kristie Klusaw dished out 26 assists in a pair of games while Deidra Artz added 18 assists in the third frame.
The Lady Broncs got off to a rough start as they collected a .057 hitting percentage in the first frame, but bounced back in the second set to give South Dakota State a run for its money before falling by a 30-27 decision. In that frame, the Lady Broncs collected a .348 hitting percentage with 21 kills and five errors in 46 total attacks.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) finished with a match-high 15 kills for the Lady Broncs while Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) notched 12 kills and six digs in the contest. Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out a match-high 43 assists and has posted 30 or more assists in 13 of the last 14 matches for the Lady Broncs.
The Lady Broncs dropped their record to 4-20 on the season and will travel to Fargo, ND, to square-off against North Dakota State on Saturday (Oct. 21).
