Lady Broncs Fall to Cardinals in Straight Sets

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team dropped its ninth straight match as the Lady Broncs fell to Lamar in straight sets (30-26, 30-20, 30-24) at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, TX, on Halloween night.

The Lady Broncs played the Cardinals tough throughout the entire match, but haunted themselves with untimely miscues as they recorded 26 errors compared to 14 for the home squad. In the match, Lamar finished with a team hitting percentage of .278 with 51 kills in 133 total attacks with 14 miscues whereas the Lady Broncs notched a team hitting percentage of .113 with 42 kills in 141 attacks and 26 errors.

In the first frame, the Lady Broncs and Cardinals played close where the scoring advantage swung back and forth between the two squads before Lamar was able to pull away with a 30-26 victory. In the second set, the Lady Broncs committed 10 miscues allowing Lamar to come away with a 30-20 triumph, and the Cardinals recorded their best game of the match with a .326 hitting percentage en route to securing the victory with by a 30-24 score.

Buchi Okoh posted a double-double for the Cardinals as the Lamar senior collected a team-high 16 kills to go along with 10 digs with a .361 hitting percentage. Courtney Mitchell finished with a match-high .455 hitting percentage en route to collecting 11 kills in 22 total attacks with a single error for the Cardinals.

Ashley Todd dished out 32 assists for the Cardinals while Andrea Hamilton and Molli Abel collected 11 and 10, respectively. The Cardinals controlled the net where they posted 6.0 total blocks whereas the Lady Broncs blocked 2.0 attempts.

Senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) finished with a match-high 17 kills and collected eight digs to lead the Lady Broncs while Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) nearly missed out on a double-double (kills-digs) as the UTPA sophomore notched nine digs and 12 digs.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted a double-double (assists-digs) as the Lady Bronc setter dished out a match-high 35 assists to go along with 14 digs, and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led all defensive players with a match-high 19 digs.

The Lady Broncs fell to 4-22 on the season while the Cardinals improved their record to 11-17 during the 2006 campaign.

UTPA will be back on the road and in action in Orem, UT, where the Lady Broncs will square-off against Utah Valley State on Saturday (Nov. 4) at 8:00 p.m.
