Lady Broncs Fall to SDSU in Straight Sets

The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team dropped its record to 4-16 on the season as the Lady Broncs fell to Independent-power South Dakota State in straight sets (30-22, 30-19, 30-19) at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Friday (Oct. 6).

The Jackrabbits, who improved their record to 13-5 on the season, recorded a .326 hitting percentage in the first frame as they captured the initial set by a 30-22. In the second set, the Jackrabbits continued their hot hand as they posted a .342 hitting percentage with 18 kills in 38 total attacks while stifling the Lady Broncs' offense at -.022 for the game.

After capturing the second set by a 30-19 count, South Dakota State took an early lead from the Lady Broncs and never looked back as the Jackrabbits ran away with a 30-19 victory en route to securing the match.

Minette Ridenour was one of two Jackrabbits that posted double-doubles (kills-digs) in the match as the SDSU senior collected 13 kills and 22 digs while Kristina Martin added a 10-kill, 12-dig performance.

Kristie Klusaw quarterbacked the SDSU offense as the Jackrabbits' senior dished out a match-high 36 assists while Samantha Pearson led the defensive prowl with 23 digs in the contest. In the match, the Jackrabbits held advantages in kills (50-34), hitting percentage (.254-.053), assists (46-29), service aces (4-1), digs (76-57) and total blocks (9.0-3.0).

Sophomore Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) collected a team-high 12 kills in the contest to go along with seven digs, and Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) added eight kills and 12 digs for the Lady Broncs.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out a team-high 28 assists while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led the squad with 16 digs.

The Lady Broncs will return to the UTPA Fieldhouse on Saturday (Oct. 7) for a rematch with the Jackrabbits with match time slated for 7:00 p.m.
