Jacks' Leave Valley with Pair of Victories over UTPA

South Dakota State University left the Rio Grande Valley with its second victory over The University of Texas-Pan American in consecutive nights as the Jackrabbits swept the Lady Broncs on Saturday (Oct. 7) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Jackrabbits rallied past the Lady Broncs right from the get-go as SDSU took advantage of a .463 hitting percentage in the first game where they connected on 22 kills in 41 total attacks with only three miscues en route to posting the 30-23 victory to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, the Lady Broncs and Jackrabbits played closely until the end when SDSU was able to break open the game and come away with a 30-23 victory. In that frame, the Jackrabbits finished with a .326 team hitting percentage with 18 kills in 43 attacks while UTPA could only manage a .042 hitting percentage with 13 kills in 48 attacks with 11 errors.

The third and final game proved to be the closest as the Lady Broncs battled back from a seven-point deficit en route to tying the frame at 29-29, but a pair of service aces by SDSU's Samantha Pearson rallied the Jackrabbits to a 31-29 victory.

Amy Anderson was the Jackrabbits' top offensive threat as the SDSU middle blocker finished with a match-high 15 kills along with a .312 hitting percentage while Emily Rooney notched 12 kills with a .588 hitting percentage to lead the victors at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Jackrabbits dished out 51 assists in the match with Diedra Artz and Kristie Klusaw collecting 28 and 22 assists, respectively, while Pearson notched a team-high 15 digs and Minette Ridenour and Stacey Wernert each collected 10 digs in the match.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) collected a double-double (kills-digs) in the match with a 14-kill, 11-dig performance, and Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) almost added her own double-double with 10 kills and nine digs in the contest.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out a team-high 34 assists while collecting eight digs, and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched a match-high 16 digs for the Lady Broncs.

The Lady Broncs dropped their overall record to 4-17 on the season while South Dakota State improved to 15-5 during the 2006 campaign.

The Lady Broncs will hit the road to San Antonio, TX, on Tuesday (Oct. 10) for a match against The University of Texas at San Antonio. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
