Lady Broncs Drop Two at Independents

The UTPA women's volleyball team had a rough first day of action at the National Independent Tournament as the Lady Broncs dropped both of their matches to the host-team North Dakota State as well as IPFW on Saturday (Nov. 10) in Fargo, ND.

North Dakota State 3, UTPA 1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-28, 30-17)
In their first match of the afternoon, the Lady Broncs dropped a four-set decision (30-21, 27-30, 30-28, 30-17) to North Dakota State at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

The Bison took to the upperhand over the Lady Broncs with a 30-21 victory, but UTPA was able to even the score at 1-1 with a 30-27 triumph in the second frame. In the third frame, the Lady Broncs and Bison were deadlocked at 28-28, but North Dakota State was able to pull away with the final two points en route to securing the frame and taking a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth set, the Bison dominated the Lady Broncs from the get-go as they recorded a .500 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 34 total attacks with only two miscues en route to a 30-17 victory for the match.

Sheila Parrish finished with a double-double with 20 kill and 18 digs while Christy Stuewe notched 12 kills and a match-high 11 blocks in the contest. Lindsey Rogers also finished with 19 kills and nine blocks for the Bison while Mattie Johnson dished out a match-high 55 assists.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) collected a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs while Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) also added a double-double following a 14-kill, 10-dig performance.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) added 50 assists in the match to lead the Lady Broncs while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Ytszel Trinidad (Mercedes, TX/Mercedes H.S.) notched 20 and 13 digs, respectively.

IPFW 3, UTPA 1 (26-30, 30-23, 30-23, 30-18)
Following a victory in the first frame, the Lady Broncs weren't able to keep the momentum going throughout the remainder of the match as they fell in the final three sets en route to dropping to 0-2 at the National Independent Tournament.

After falling 30-26 in the first frame, the Mastodons responded by recording a hitting percentage of .320 or higher in each of the next three sets en route to posting victories of 30-23, 30-23 and 30-18 to go 1-0 in the tournament.

Rebekah Roehm notched a match-high 17 kills for the Mastodons while Claire Jackson and Jessica Miller notched 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Jessica Dominiak dished out 52 assists while Peachy Jankowski notched a team-high 21 digs in the contest.

Phillips recorded her second double-double of the match with a 18-kill, 17- dig performance while Bravo also collected her second double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs.

Blakely notched her first double-double of the tournament with a 44-assist, 14-dig performance while Lyons notched a match-high 24 digs for the Lady Broncs.

UTPA will be back in action for its final match of the 2006 season against Providence at the National Independent Tournament with match time set for 2:00 p.m.
