It's been a rough season for the UTPA women's volleyball team, but the Lady Broncs were able to close the 2006 campaign on a high note as they cruised to a straight-set victory over Providence at the National Independent Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 11) in Fargo, ND.
The Lady Broncs posted their best offensive performance of the season against the Friars as they recorded a .361 hitting percentage with 71 kills in 147 total attacks with 18 miscues. In total, the Lady Broncs had three players post 10 or more kills and five players recorded a hitting percentage above .300 in the match.
UTPA opened up the match with a dominating 30-22 victory then followed that up with a down to the wire 31-29 victory before securing the match with a 30-21 triumph to capture the win.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with a double-double (kills-digs) with a 21-kill, 10-dig performance while Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) also posted a double-double with 19 kills and 20 digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) had one of her best all-around matches for the Lady Broncs as she finished with a match-high 50 kills to go along with 12 digs, eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage.
Monique Schaal (Twin Falls, ID/College of Southern Idaho) added 11 kills for the Lady Broncs while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) collected 17 digs in the contest.
The Lady Broncs claimed fifth-place honors with the victory over Providence at the National Independent Tournament.
