UTPA Seniors Go Out with Victory in Home Finale

The UTPA women's volleyball program honored two of its all-time top seniors in Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) prior to the beginning of the final home match of the 2006 campaign.

In their final home match donning the Green and Orange, Bravo and Lyons each posted a stellar evening as they helped lead the Lady Broncs to a straight-set victory over Texas A&M-International on Tuesday (Nov. 7) evening.

The Lady Broncs and Dustdevils came out with a purpose in the match and battled back-and-forth in each of the three matches, but in the end, it was the Valley's squad that came away with the victory.

In the first frame, the Lady Broncs were able to pull away at the end of the match to record the 30-24 victory followed by a hard-fought 32-30 triumph in the second set to give UTPA the 2-0 advantage heading into the third and final set.

In the final match, the Lady Broncs jumped out to a big 10-2 lead, but Texas A&M-International refused to give in as they battled back to tied the score at 23-23. In the end, UTPA was able to recover and come away with the 30-27 victory en route to securing its fifth victory of the season.

Bravo posted her 10th double-double of the season with a 12-kill, 13-dig performance while Lyons led all players with a match-high 24 digs in the contest.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) nearly missed out on a double-double as she finished with a match-high 40 assists to go along with eight digs while Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) added 12 kills and 10 digs in the winning cause.

Monique Schaal (Twin Falls, ID/College of Southern Idaho) aided the Lady Broncs with a strong performance at the net as the UTPA junior finished with 10 kills while her partner in the middle Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) notched nine kills to go along with a .421 hitting percentage.

Eliza Cezario finished with a team-high 17 kills along with a .344 hitting percentage while Desiree Arredondo collected a double-double with 39 assists and 16 digs for the Dustdevils.

As a team, the Lady Broncs held advantages in kills (51-43), total attacks (141-139), assists (45-39), service aces (8-5), digs (65-62) and hitting percentage (.213-.144).

The Lady Broncs improved their record to 5-23 on the season while Texas A&M-International dropped to 24-5 during the 2006 campaign.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action for their season-ending National Independent Tournament hosted by North Dakota State in Fargo, ND, beginning on Friday (Nov. 10).
