Lady Broncs Buck Cowgirls, 67-37

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team picked up its second road-win of the season as they defeated McNeese State University by a score of 67-37 at the Civic Center in Lake Charles, LA, on Monday (Dec. 18).

The game started off slow as the score was 8-6 in favor of the Lady Broncs with 12:29 remaining in the opening half, until a Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) three-pointer sparked a 9-3 run, making the score 20-9 at the 8:07 mark.

That's all she wrote in the first half for the McNeese State University Cowgirls as the Lady Broncs hit their stride and buckled down defensively, closing the final 8:00 minutes of the first half with a 12-0 run.

Senior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/ Mary Carroll) closed out the first half with a successful lay-up, making the score 32-9 heading into the intermission.

In their most successful first half of the season, Winfrey led all scorers with eight points on an error-free 2-of-2 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

UTPA won the turnover battle, turning the ball over eight times to the Cowgirl's 15. The Lady Broncs capitalized on the McNeese State miscues by scoring 18 points off turnovers while the bench added 10 points in the first half.

The Lady Broncs went shot 45.8 percent on 11-of-28 from the field, while knocking down four three-pointers and shooting a solid 85.7 percent on 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. McNeese State shot a dismal 25 percent in the first half and 20 percent from the three-point line while missing on their only opportunity from the foul line.

The second half faired much better for the Cowgirls, but unfortunately for them, it faired better for the Lady Broncs as UTPA went on a 7-2 run right out of the gate.

Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) increased the lead to 32, hitting two straight jumpers with 13:28 left to play.

UTPA took their largest lead of the game at 34 on a Tiona Wilson (Bradenton FL/Southeast H.S.) jumper with 10:42 remaining in the game, making the score 52-18.

Mcneese State tried valiantly as Shonice Sprouse hit a pair of three-pointers, including one with 6:07 remaining in the game to close the lead to 24, but the Lady Broncs took over the final minutes of the contest by going on a 9-3 run to close out the game.

The Lady Broncs shot an impressive 64 percent from the field in the second half to the Cowgirl's 32.4 percent while out-rebounding their opponents 14-8.

Vaughn led all scorers with 16 points, on 6-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes of action.

Daniel grabbed nine rebounds on the night while scoring a season-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, in 35 minutes on the court.

The Lady Broncs dominated the Cowgirls in all phases of the game. UTPA won the turnover battle by only committing 18 miscues to McNeese State's 24 while dominating the boards 31-17. On the night, UTPA shot 55.1 percent from the field to the Cowgirl's 32.4 percent while holding McNeese State to 11-of-34 from the field.

The win improves the Lady Broncs to 5-8 on the season as they head to Lafayette, LA, to rematch the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns on Wednesday (Dec. 20) with the contest scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
