The UTPA men's basketball team suffered its second straight loss after a 75-58 setback to South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, on Saturday (Feb. 11).
Junior Ben Beran nearly missed a double-double (points-rebounds) in the contest as he finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. He finished the game shooting 8-14 from the field, including 3-5 from the charity stripe, while dishing out a single assist in the contest.
The Jackrabbits almost received their second double-double (points-rebounds) after Jose Frias finished with 14 points, including 6-9 from the field, and eight rebounds to go along with two assists on the evening. Matt Cadwell finished with 12 points in the game while Michael Loney added 10 points and five rebounds.
Junior Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.) finished with 18 points on the evening to lead all Bronc scorers to go along with four rebounds and one assist. Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) also reached double figures in the contest as he collected 14 points as well as four rebounds and a trio of assists. Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) finished with six assists and five points in the game.
As a team, South Dakota State finished the game converting on 50.9 percent (27-53) of its shots while UTPA was only able to connect on 38.9 percent (21-54) of its attempts. The Jackrabbits also held a 41-29 edge on the boards to go along with a 5-1 block advantage on the Broncs.
With the setback, UTPA fell to 7-19 on the season while South Dakota State improved its record to 7-16 on the year.
The Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 15) in Denton, TX, where they will square-off against the University of North Texas with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
