Lamar Squeaks by Broncs 4-3 in Southland Conference Action

The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis squad fell to Southland Conference foe Lamar University on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center 4-3.

Senior Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) improved his season record to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Maciej Bogusz in second flight action. Steil teamed with Danny Farias (Harlingen, TX/Temple College) in doubles action and fell 8-6 to Brett Sticker and Tyler Cobb. Farias lost his sixth flight singles match to Sticker 7-5, 6-2.

In top flight singles play, Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Filip Kanczula. Rehman Esmail (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/North Carolina State) won his first match of the season over Jacob Eastwood by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Porter and Wells were handed an 8-3 loss in doubles competition.

Newcomer Andrew Bost (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) earned his first career victory as a Bronc, defeating Evan Hays 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Bost and teammate Alberto Gomez (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) picked up the doubles victory over Hays and Eastwood 8-3. Gomez dropped his fourth flight singles match to Wesley Arnold 6-4, 6-1.

The Broncs next match comes against Grambling State on Friday (Feb. 24) at 2:00 p.m. in Hammond, LA where they will also face Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State.
