The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team lost a 10-0 decision on Sunday (Feb. 12) to the Lamar Cardinals at Vincent Beck Stadium in Beaumont, TX.
Two big innings provided most of the Lamar offense as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added five more in the bottom of the seventh, giving them a 10-0 lead and ending the game due to the 10-run rule.
The Cardinals put up a four-run first inning thanks to four hits and a walk. C.J. Ebarb delivered a bases loaded single to score two runs and would later drive a three-run home run to left center field in the seventh inning. Ebarb finished the day with three hits and five runs batted in.
Junior catcher Dan Calabro (South Royalton, VT/Northern Oklahoma College) provided the only Bronc offense of the day, collecting a one-out single in to center field. Calabro ended the day 1-2 at the plate. The only other Bronc batter to reach base was Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), who walked in the fourth inning.
Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) started for the Broncs and suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and striking out three in just two innings of work. Sunday marked the first start of Silva's Bronc career and with the loss his record falls to 1-1 on the season. Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) pitched the final four innings for UTPA, allowing five earned runs on six hits.
Lamar's William Delage pitched all seven inning for the Cardinals, holding the Broncs to just one hit while striking out nine and walking just one. Delage improved to 1-0 on the season for Lamar.
The final game of the three-game series between UTPA and Lamar will commence on Monday (Feb. 13) at 1:00 p.m. in Beaumont, TX.
