Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped its fourth-straight game on Monday (Feb. 13) to the Lamar Cardinals, 11-3, in Beaumont, TX.

Lamar opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs on a Collin DeLome double. UTPA then pulled within one in the top of the fifth when Dan Calabro (South Royalton, VT/Northern Oklahoma College) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Lamar had an answer in the bottom half of the fifth as C.J. Ebarb homered for the second-straight game and increased the Cardinal lead to 5-1.

Ebarb's home run proved to be the definitive blow for the Cardinals, but Lamar added three more runs in the sixth. UTPA scraped two more runs across the plate in the eighth inning thanks to a Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) bases-loaded single and an RBI walk from Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.). The Broncs wouldn't get any closer as Lamar put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) started his third game of the season and went five innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. He struck out six Cardinal hitters while walking three as his season record fell to 1-2.

Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) and Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) were the only Bronc pitchers not responsible for allowing a run as both threw 0.2 innings in relief.

The Broncs scattered five hits throughout the game with five different players collecting hits. Bartosh and Powers were the only two players with runs batted in while Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) and Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) both had doubles in Monday's action.

Seven Lamar pitchers combined to hold the Broncs to three runs with Derrick Gordon earning the win. Gordon threw four innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five.

UTPA's record fell to 3-5 with the loss while Lamar improved to 4-2 with the sweep over the Broncs.

The Broncs return to the diamond as they host the Al Ogletree Classic at Edinburg Baseball Stadium this coming weekend (Feb. 17-19) with Arkansas, TCU and Stephen F. Austin participating. The first games are on Friday (Feb. 17) with Arkansas and TCU facing off at 1:00 p.m. and UTPA taking on Stephen F. Austin at 5:00 p.m.
