The University of North Texas cruised past the UTPA men's basketball program by an 84-45 margin at The Super Pit in Denton, TX, on Wednesday (Feb. 15).
The Mean Green came out firing early and often in the first half and quickly took a 13-point advantage at 17-4 when Calvin Watson connected on the third UNT three-pointer in the first three minutes with 16:43 remaining in the first half.
North Texas was able to increase its first half lead to over 20 points at 26-6 following a lay-in by junior center Jeffery Simpson at the 10:42 mark. Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Broncs would only cut the lead to less than 20 points twice as the Mean Green headed into the locker room with a safe 47-21 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, the Mean Green continued to rally onto the Broncs by taking their biggest lead of the game to 49 points at 74-25 with 12:09 remaining in the game. North Texas cruised throughout the remainder of the half en route to heading into the locker room with an 84-45 triumph.
The Mean Green had four players reach double figures in the contest with Simpson collecting a team-high 14 points on 7-12 shooting in the contest. Isaac Hines and Kendrick Davis collected 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Watson chipped in with 10 points for the Mean Green.
Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) scored a game-high 16 points in the game to go along with seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.), who played all 40 minutes for the second straight game, finished with 11 points and five rebounds while Danny Puente (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added eight points.
North Texas finished the game shooting 50.0 percent (33-66), including 54.5 percent (18-33) during the first 20 minutes, while the Broncs were held to 29.4 percent (15-51) from the floor. The Mean Green held a 15-rebound advantage over the Broncs by a 45-30 edge, and dished out 15 assists to seven for the Broncs.
With the victory, North Texas improved its record to 12-12 on the season while the Broncs fell to 7-20 during the 2005-06 campaign.
The Broncs will be back at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Monday (Feb. 20) where UTPA welcomes Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to the Rio Grande Valley. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
