Broncs Pound out 10 Runs on Lumberjacks for 10-3 Win

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team picked up win number four on Friday (Feb. 17) in their first game at the Al Ogletree Classic, held at Edinburg Baseball Stadium, over the Stephen F. Austin State Lumberjacks, 10-3.

The Broncs got on the board early, racing out to a 4-0 lead. Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South High School) started off the scoring with a no-out, bases loaded single that brought Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) and Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) across the plate. After a Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) sacrifice bunt, Nick Spears (Austin, TX/Bowie High School) drove a single over the second baseman's head, plating two more runs for the Broncs.

SFA would pull within two with a two-run third inning, but the Broncs answered in the bottom of the inning with a run scored on a Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix J.C.) single, bringing the score to 5-2. The Broncs would add three more in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run, bases-loaded double down the left field line by Flores. UTPA added two more in the seventh for a cushy 10-2 lead. The Lumberjacks managed to push one run across in the ninth to pull to 10-3.

Ricky Ibarz (Caracas, Venezuela/New Mexico J.C.) picked up his first win as a Bronc, pitching five innings and allowing two runs, neither of which was earned. Ibarz allowed four hits while striking out five while and walking three. The junior's record now stands at 1-1 on the season.

Flores led the Broncs offensively, collecting two hits in five at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring one. Pena finished the game 2-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored while Lozano was 2-2 with two runs scored and one run batted in.

Alamia, Bartosh, Spears and T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) all collected one hit a piece for UTPA. Spears had two RBI and one run scored while Alamia scored two and drove in one.

Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McLennan J.C.) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits, striking out two and walking one. Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) pitched 2/3 of an inning, striking out one while allowing no hits and Ronnie Morales (Great Falls, MT/Barton County C.C.) pitched the final frame, allowing one unearned run on one hit.

The Broncs' final line was 10 runs on 10 hits with three errors as they improved their season record to 4-5 while the Lumberjacks fell to 2-6.

UTPA returns to action during day two of the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday (Feb. 18) at Edinburg Baseball Stadium against TCU at 5:00 p.m.
