The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team left 13 runners on base on Saturday (Feb. 18) in its second game in the Al Ogletree Classic, losing to the 18th-ranked Texas Christian University Horned Frogs by a score of 9-4.
Bronc starter Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) got off to a rough start in the top of the first inning. Five of the first six TCU hitters reached base, with the first two batters collecting singles and later scoring on a Matt McGuirk single up the middle. Two batters later, Matt Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Keith Conlon before McGuirk was caught trying to advance to third base on the play.
The Horned Frogs added a run in the third, building their lead to 4-0. In the top of the fifth, Conlon and McGuirk hit back-to-back singles followed by a two-run double to right-center field off the bat of Austin Adams.
UTPA got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) singled to right field, bringing Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) across the plate for the Broncs' first run. Following a Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) walk, freshman Nick Spears (Austin, TX/Bowie H.S.) drove a single up the middle to bring Pena home, making the score 6-2.
UTPA pulled within three in the sixth inning when Brooks lined a single into center field, bringing Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen H.S.) home from second base. TCU put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh thanks to three runs scored off Bronc relievers Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) and Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.). The Broncs tacked on one more run in the seventh on a T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) single.
Spears collected the first multi-hit game of his young career, going 2-4 in the game and driving in one run. Pena drove in one run and scored one in going 2-4 at the plate while also walking once. Gilmer finished with one run batted in and collected two hits in four at-bats. Center fielder Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) was the fourth Bronc to record two hits, doing so in five plate appearances.
Mason allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits while striking out four and walking two. The loss drops his record to 0-2 on the season. Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for UTPA, striking out two and allowing four hits but zero runs.
Jake Arrieta (2-0) earned the win for the Horned Frogs as they evened up their season record to 3-3. The Broncs are now 4-6.
