Broncs Sweep SHSU in Doubleheader

The Bronc diamondmen swept Sam Houston State in a doubleheader in Huntsville, TX, by identical 5-2 scores on Sunday (Feb. 26).

In the first game, UTPA senior Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) picked up his first victory of the season as he gave up seven hits in seven innings of action. Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) picked up the save for the Broncs after hurling the final two innings while sitting down three hitters.

Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) collected two hits in the contest, including a RBI single in the third inning while Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) and Jason Buhagiar (Penngrove, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) each recorded RBI doubles for the Broncs.

The Broncs got one run in each of the last three innings, beginning with T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) scoring on an infield error in the seventh inning. Autrey would later score in the eighth inning on a Dan Calabro (South Royalton, VT/Northern Oklahoma College) bases-loaded walk. Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) connected on a RBI single in the ninth inning, scoring Flores.

In the second game, the Broncs came back from a 2-1 deficit to collect a 5-2 victory over the Bearkats. Flores once again came up big for the Broncs as he posted a RBI single in the seventh frame to tie the score while adding insurance runs in that frame on an error and passed ball.

Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) upped his record to 2-1 on the season while he held Sam Houston State to four hits over the course of 6.2 innings of action. Haines come on in relief to pick up his second save of the day as he hurled the final inning of action.

The Broncs improved their record to 6-8 on the season, and will be back in action next weekend in a three-game series against Sam Houston State. First pitch is set for Friday (Mar. 3) at 6:00 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
