The UTPA women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory over Nicholls State on Sunday (Feb. 26) while the men's tennis team fell by the same score to the Colonels in Thibodaux, LA.
On the women's side, the Lady Broncs captured two of the three doubles' matches with Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) recording an 8-6 victory over Lilian Leermakers and Veronika Ramirez.
Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, France/Fenelon Sainte Marie) and Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) defeated Lusitina Gasca-Silav and Monique Savoy by an 8-5 count while Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) and Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.) dropped an 8-3 decision to Neo Malope and Dorian Robichaux.
In singles' action, Buksik captured a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Silav in the first flight while Mabulac triumphed over Leermakers after the NSU player retired midway through the first set. Sloan captured a 6-4 and 6-3 decision over Savoy, and Garcia handed Malope a 6-2, 6-2 setback in the fifth flight.
In men's action, the Colonels handed UTPA a 5-2 setback en route to improving their record to 2-5 on the season.
Sebastien Normand and Denis Borisevich blanked Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) and Rehman Esmail (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada/North Carolina State) by an 8-0 count in the first flight of doubles while Andrew Bost (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) and Alberto Gomez (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) lost to Ricardo van Bolderick and Alexandru Silav by the same count.
In singles' action, Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) picked up a three-set victory over Vlad Lucsian-Popa by a count of 6-3, 0-6 and 1-0 (10-7). Danny Farias (Harlingen, TX/Temple College) won in the sixth flight by default.
Porter suffered a straight-set 6-2, 6-0 match to Normand in the number-one flight whiel Gomez fell to Borisevich by a 6-0, 6-1 count. Esmail fell to Silav by a 6-3, 6-3 count, and Bost suffered a 6-4 and 6-4 decision to Bolderick.
Over the weekend, the Lady Broncs finished with a 2-1 record in their three matches while the Broncs were 1-2 with their lone victory coming over Grambling State by default.
