The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team got off to a strong start at the Abilene Christian Indoor Classic, earning the victory over the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers on Friday (Feb. 3), 6-1.

Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) were both double winners for the Lady Broncs, teaming up to win the first flight doubles match against Marika Dawkins and Antionette Majors, 8-1. Buksik then won the top flight singles match against Dawkins, 6-2, 6-1. Garcia downed Charlie Cooksey in the fifth flight, 8-2.

In second flight singles action, Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, France/Fenelon Sainte Marie) defeated Melanie Brown, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) earned the deciding point for the Lady Broncs over Majors, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) to clinch the victory for UTPA.

Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) beat Michele Scurry 6-0, 6-1 and Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.) lost to Nicole Banks, 6-3, 6-4. The doubles team of de Bourqueney/Nanez picked up the victory over Cooksey/Banks, 8-0 while the duo of Sloan/Mabulac dropped a match to Scurry/Brown.

The Lady Broncs have another match on Friday against host squad Abilene Christian.
