Broncs Fall to Big 12 Foe Oklahoma, 16-3

Final Stats

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team (2-1) dropped its first game of the young season on Saturday (Feb. 4) to the Oklahoma Sooners (2-0), 16-3, at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) took the loss for the Broncs, allowing five earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Mason struck out two batters and walked one. Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) was first in relief for the Broncs, throwing one inning and allowing runs on hits.

The Sooners jumped on the board with a two-run second inning followed by a four-run third. OU pounded out four more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a leadoff home run by Russell Raley. After three and a half innings, the Broncs were down 10-0.

UTPA got their first runs in the fourth, plating two off Sooner starter Steve Guerra. Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Autrey finished the night with one hit and two runs batted in.

The Broncs scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth. Ruben Shives, Jr. (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) led the inning off with a single and advanced in to scoring position on a walk by Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, Ca/Santa Rosa J.C.). UTPA would load the bases before Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen H.S.) sent a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Shives across the plate.

Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) threw 4.2 innings in relief, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking four. Stephen Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) finished the game on the mound for the Broncs, throwing a perfect 1-2-3 inning.

The Broncs return to the diamond for the final day of the UTPA Baseball Classic on Sunday (Feb. 5) when they take on the Texas State Bobcats at 5:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
