Lady Broncs Drop Pair of Matches at Abilene Christian

The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks this past weekend in Abilene, TX, to drop its record to 1-4 in the 2006 campaign.

Abilene Christian 7, UTPA 0
Following a victory against Prairie View A&M, the Lady Broncs were blanked by the host-program Abilene Christian by a 7-0 count on Saturday night.

In doubles' action, Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Wablingen) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) dropped an 8-4 decision against Irene Squillaci and Meagan Brown while the team of Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) and Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) fell to Holly Lindloff and Lana Pavlin by an 8-1 margin.

Abilene Christian completed the sweep in doubles with Elizabeth Korinek and Sara Baker coming away with an 8-2 victory over Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, France/Fenelon Sainte Marie) and Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.).

In singles' action, de Bourqueney suffered a tough loss to Pavlin in a third-set tiebreaker (3-6, 6-1, 1-0) while Garcia also dropped a tight match against Sandra Vucic by a 9-7 margin. Buksik loss to Squillaci in straight sets (6-1 and 6-1) as did Mabulac to Lindloff by a score of 6-0 and 6-0.

Sloan also battled tough before losing a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Brown, and Nanez was blanked by Heidi Lindloff by an 8-0 margin.

Stephen F. Austin 6, UTPA 1
On Sunday, the Lady Broncs dropped a 6-1 decision to Southland Conference-foe Stephen F. Austin State University in Abilene, TX.

Garcia recorded the only victory for the Lady Broncs on the second day of competition with an 8-4 victory over Gaby Gadeva. Over the weekend, the UTPA sophomore finished with a 2-1 record.

The team of Garcia and Buksik fell to Kama Scott and Megan Langston by an 8-2 decision while Laura Harrison and Lauren Nowick recorded an 8-2 triumph against Sloan and Mabulac. The Lumberjacks also picked up an 8-5 victory by Whitney DeYoung and Mary Harrison against de Bourqueney and Nanez.

In singles' action, Buksik was handed a 6-4, 6-2 setback to Harrison while de Bourqueney also dropped a tough 6-4, 6-2 loss to Scott. Mabulac loss in straight sets (6-4, 7-5), and Sloan and Nanez each dropped a match against Stephen F. Austin.

The Lady Broncs will make their home debut against Lamar University on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center with match time set for 10:00 a.m.
