Broncs Drop Home Contest to Islanders by 7-0 Count

The UTPA men's tennis team battled and battled on the Sunday (Feb. 5) against the 18th-ranked Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders, but fell by a 7-0 count at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

In doubles' action, Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) and Rehman Esmail (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/North Carolina State) dropped an 8-2 decision to Andrey Kumantsov and Mikitail Pavlov, and Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) and Andrew Bost (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) fell to Raul Morant-Rivas and Jose Zunino by an 8-1 margin.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi recorded the sweep on the Broncs in doubles' action when Joey Farias and Sharon Henselijn posted an 8-1 triumph over Enrique Montemayor (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) and Alberto Gomez (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.).

In singles' action, Porter dropped a 6-0, 7-6 decision to Kumantsov in the first flight, while Steil slipped to Morant-Rivas by a 6-2, 6-1 count. In the third pairing, Esmail dropped a 6-1, 6-1 match to Pavlov, and Zunino picked up a hard-earned 6-4, 7-5 decision against Bost.

Gomez fell to Jose Ycaza by a 6-0, 6-2 count in the fifth flight while Montemayor was handed a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Jan Cingel.

The Broncs dropped their record to 0-1 on the season, but will return to the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Friday (Feb. 10) when they compete against Abilene Christian University with match time set for 2:00 p.m.
