The Broncs got on the board early, scoring one run when Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) doubled in Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Smith drove in Buhagiar and Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) with a single to center field and later scored on a Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) ground-out to second base. The Broncs led 5-3 through two and a half innings.
DBU answered against with a Krum lead-off home run followed by another home run by the next batter, Cody Montgomery. Later in the inning, Jimmy Thoma hit a grand slam off Bronc reliever Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.), giving the Patriots a 9-5 lead. UTPA closed the gap to 9-7 in the fourth on a Smith double that drove in Brooks and Alamia.
