UTPA Tennis Falls on Road to UTSA

The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's tennis teams each dropped a decision to The University of Texas-San Antonio on Saturday (Mar. 18) at the UTSA Tennis Courts in San Antonio, TX.

On the men's side, the Broncs were blanked by a 7-0 decision to their Southland Conference-foes UTSA. With the victory, the Roadrunners improved to 6-7 while the Broncs dropped their record to 1-9 and 0-5 in conference action.

The Roadrunners won all six singles' matches as well as a trio of doubles' matches with Andre Moreira and Robin Fernandes starting off the action with a 7-6 triumph over the UTPA team of Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) and Rehman Esmail (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada/North Carolina State).

Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) and Andrew Bost (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) suffered an 8-4 setback to Anthony Portois and Jonas Hoglund at the second flight of the doubles' action. Adam Becker and Joe Olfindo defeated Danny Farias (Harlingen, TX/Temple College) and Enrique Montemayor (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) by an 8-0 decision in the third flight.

In singles' action, Portois handed Porter a straight-set defeat by a 6-4, 6-4 count while Steil suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback to Moreira in the second flight.

Esmail won his first set against Fernandes by a 7-6 count, but fell in the second set by a score of 6-1 then dropped a 10-8 match during the tiebreaker. Bost, Montemayor and Farias each dropped a straight-set decision to their Roadrunner counterparts.

On the women's side of the net, the Roadrunners improved their record to 7-5 with a 5-2 defeat of the Lady Broncs' tennis team.

UTSA won all three doubles' matches with Karen Scida and Sandra Kukla handing Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) an 8-3 setback in the first flight.

Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) and Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) fell by an 8-2 decision to Tanya Hasking and Ana Paula Soto Anton in the second flight. Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, France/Fenelon Sainte Marie) and Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.) lost an 8-4 decision in the third flight to Nathalie Wallin and Monika Drabkova.

Sloan captured a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Drabkova in the fourth flight of singles' action while Garcia handed Anton a 6-7, 1-0 (retired) defeat in the fifth flight. Buksik, de Bourqueney, Mabulac and Nanez each suffered straight-set losses.

The Broncs will be back in action on Mar. 25 in College Station, TX, against Big 12-opponent Texas A&M. The Lady Broncs will hit the courts on Mar. 25 in Houston, TX, against the University of Houston.
