Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team earned a 3 -1 victory over the Texas State Bobcats on Tuesday (Mar. 21) in San Marcos, TX.

The Broncs opened up scoring in the first inning when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) singled to left field and was then driven in two batters later on a Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) double to left center field. UTPA added another run in the top of the fourth when Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a balk. He then moved up to third on a ground ball to first base and scored on a second balk, giving the Broncs a 2-0 advantage.

The Bobcats pulled within one in the bottom of the fourth on a throwing error by Bronc catcher Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.). Texas State would get no closer as UTPA scored against in the fifth when Alamia singled up the middle to score Jason Buhagiar (Penngrove, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.). The Broncs got their final run in the eighth as Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) singled to right center, scoring Alamia.

Bronc starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) scattered seven hits over seven innings pitched to earn his first win of the season and even his record at 1-1. Linder struck out three while not issuing a walk.

Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McLennan J.C.) and Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief with Haines picking up his fifth save of the season and tying for second on the career saves list with 11.

At the plate, Alamia led all hitters with three hits in four at-bats. He scored two runs and drove in one. The Bronc senior has hit safely in five straight games and during that span has raised his batting average from .302 to .343.

Brooks finished 1-for-4 and Smith was 1-for-3 with each of them driving in one run. Honeycutt and Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix College) were the other two Broncs to collect hits with one a piece.

The Broncs improved their record to 12-17 with the win while the Bobcats fell to 11-14 on the season.

The two teams meet for the last time this season on Wednesday (Mar. 22) in San Marcos, TX at 3:00 p.m.
