The University of Texas-Pan American Bronc baseball team soundly defeated the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders 10-3 on Saturday (Mar. 25) in Corpus Christi, TX at Whataburger Field.
The Broncs got to the Islanders in the top of the first inning when T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) was hit by a pitch to lead things off. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) followed with a single and then Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) walked to load the bases with zero outs. Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) drove in the first run with a fly-ball in foul territory down the left field line. Alamia later scored on an error by the shortstop.
TAMUCC got on the board in the second when they scored a run on a passed ball and throwing error. UTPA added to its lead in the fourth on a Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix College) RBI single and then Jason Buhagiar (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and Lozano scored on an error by the center fielder. The Islanders closed the gap to two with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Broncs returned the lead to four with a pair of runs. Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) smacked a double to left center field to drive in Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville). Garcia later scored on a Gilmer walk. UTPA put it completely out of reach in the eighth on a Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) three-run home run.
Senior Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State) made the start for the Broncs, scattering seven hits of 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs, just one of them earned, while striking out seven and walking three. Mason improved his record to 4-3 on the season. Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) picked up his first save of the season, holding the Islanders hitless over the final 3.2 innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked two.
Honeycutt's home run was his second of the season as well as his career. He was 1-for4 with three runs batted in and one run scored. Garcia had two hits in four at-bats, scoring three runs and driving in one.
Gilmer and Alamia both had two hits in the top two spots in the order. Gilmer also had two walks and had one RBI and one run scored. Alamia also scored a run. Whittlesey went 1-for-1 in the game and scored two runs.
UTPA improved its record to 14-17 with the victory while the Islanders fall to 11-16.
The Broncs and Islanders meet again on Sunday (Mar. 26) in Corpus Christi, TX at Islander Field at 2:00 p.m.
