The UTPA women's basketball team picked up its seventh win of the season on Saturday (Mar. 4) over the Wolverines of Utah Valley State by a score of 65-49.
The Lady Bronc seniors went out with a bang as all four started their final game at UTPA. Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.), Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College), Stacey Gooden (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) and Joanna Fuentes (McAllen, TX/McAllen H.S.) combined to score 54 points, pull down 16 rebounds and dish out 10 assists in the victory.
"It was a great send-off for the seniors. They played a picture perfect game and it was a special performance for these ladies. They left everything on the floor tonight," said head coach DeAnn Craft.
The Lady Broncs took a 3-2 lead at the 18:20 mark on a Montague three-pointer and never looked back as they went on a 10-2 run. UTPA led by as many as 11 during the first half and took a 28-20 lead in to the locker room at halftime. Reed and Montague scored 11 points apiece during the first stanza.
In the second half, the Lady Broncs took a 10-point lead with 17:24 left to play and kept the Wolverines behind by at least nine the rest of the way. An 18-point advantage was the largest UPTA held when Gooden connected on a free throw with 2:25 on the clock.
Reed finished the night with a career-high 24 points on 7-14 shooting, 3-8 from behind the three-point arc, and 7-9 from the free throw line. The Lady Bronc senior added six rebounds, six assists and three steals in 38 minutes on the court.
Montague connected on 4-10 shots from three-point range and was 6-12 from field to score 16 points. Montague also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists. Gooden posted a 14-point performance thanks to 6-12 shooting from the field while pulling down five boards and blocking one shot. Tonight marked the 109th game of Gooden's career, placing her third on the UTPA all-time games played list.
"Dominique held nothing back tonight. She provided the spark offensively at the beginning of the game and that set the tone for the night," added Craft.
Junior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) came down with a game-high 11 rebounds while also blocking three shots and collecting three steals. Daniel scored two points and had two assists.
"You're not going to find a better rebounder at 5-10 than MaHogany. She's always around the ball and keeps it alive at both ends of the floor. She got a lot of rebounds against a very physical team and that was crucial for us," stated Craft.
UTPA out-rebounded the Wolverines by a 44-36 margin and forced them in to 22 turnovers. The Lady Broncs out-shot UVSC 39 percent to 34 percent and connected on five more three-pointers than the Wolverines.
The Lady Broncs finished the season with a 7-21 record, 6-5 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. With the loss, Utah Valley State falls to 12-15.
