It took the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners extra-innings to take down the Bronc baseball team on Tuesday (Mar. 7) in San Antonio, TX by a score of 10-9.

The Broncs started the scoring right away as Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) reached on a fielding error by second baseman J.R. Voyles and was followed by a double from Jason Buhagiar (Penngrove, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and an RBI single off the bat of Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville). Later in the inning, Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) drew a two-out walk, setting up sophomore Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) for his first career hit, a grand slam to give the Broncs a 5-0 lead mid-way through the first inning.

UTSA answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off Bronc starter Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) when Lee Todesco singled to left field, driving in two runners. UTPA came right back in the second with Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) doubling to left field, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Alamia, then scoring on an infield single by Buhagiar. Two batters later, Buhagiar crossed the plate on a Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) sacrifice fly, giving the Broncs a 7-2 advantage.

UTPA held the lead until a six-run sixth inning that included five extra-base hits from the Roadrunners, three of which were triples. In the seventh, a Brandon Koger home run gave UTSA a 9-7 lead heading in to the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, the Broncs fought back with a pinch-hit single by Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) that scored Flores and Mario Tremblay (Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada/Grambling State) to tie the game at 9-9.

Closer Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) came on in the UTSA eighth and held the Roadrunner scoreless through the ninth but walked the lead-off hitter in the bottom of the tenth and then committed an error that allowed the lead-off man to advance to third. After intentionally walking the bases loaded, Ryan Saltzgraber singled in to center field, giving UTSA the 10-9 victory.

Honeycutt's grand slam was his first base hit in 14 at-bats as a Bronc. The UTPA catcher finished the day 2-for-5 with one run scored and four runs batted in. Buhagiar led the team with three hits in five plate appearance, scoring two runs and driving in one.
