Broncs Drop First Two Games at 15th-Ranked Oregon State

The UTPA baseball team dropped the first two games against 15th-ranked Oregon State on Saturday (Apr. 1) in Corvallis, OR by scores of 5-4 and 9-1.

The first game was a continuation of the game started Friday (Mar. 31) night that was postponed due to rain. The Broncs held the lead through three innings but were unable to hold off the Beavers on Saturday as they dropped the 5-4 decision in 10 innings.

Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) went six innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out two. Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) was handed the loss for the Broncs, his record is now 2-3 on the year.

Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) was 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game, driving in one run with a double. Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) collected two RBI while going 1-for-3 at the plate. T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) added a double for the Broncs.

In game two, Oregon State got to Bronc starter Ricky Ibarz (Caracas, Venezuela/New Mexico Junior College) in the third inning, exploding for six runs. Ibarz issued a leadoff walk and then allowed three straight singles. Two more batters reached on Bronc errors in the inning as UTPA committed three miscues in the inning.

The Broncs got on the board for their solo run in the fifth inning with three straight singles. Ruben Shives, Jr. (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) and Gilmer both singled through the right side before Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) lined a single in to center field to score Shives from second. The Beavers then increased their lead with runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Ibarz lasted 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs, four of them earned, while giving up eight hits and striking out five. The left-hander suffered the loss, dropping his record to 3-4. Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Alamia was 3-for-4 at the plate in game two, including a double, and had the only RBI.

The Broncs record falls to 15-19 on the season while the Beavers improved to 18-8.

The third game of the series began at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, results will be available on Sunday (Apr. 2).
