The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs blew an early seven run lead but fought back to take the 11-10 decision over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Thursday (Apr. 13) at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs scored seven runs on nine hits in the first innings, highlighted by a bases-loaded double from Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) off the wall in left-center field, plating three runners in the first inning. The Islanders answered with one run in the third, three more in the fourth and one in the sixth to pull within two at 7-5. UTPA made it eight runs in the bottom of the sixth when Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) scored Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) on a fielder's choice to second base.
The Islanders put up a big five-run seventh inning that included a three-run home run from Todd Hawpe. The Broncs managed to tie the game in the eighth when Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) came up with a huge pinch-hit single to drive in a pair of runs and tie the game at 10. In the bottom of the 11th, with the game still tied at 10, freshman Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) blooped a two-out single into center field to scored Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) from second base to win the game.
Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) earned the win for the Broncs, retiring the last two Islander batters in the top of the 11th to improve his record to 3-3 on the season. Alamia extended his current hitting streak to 16 games, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored.
Flores finished the night 3-for-7 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Brooks was on base five times, going 2-for-4 at the plate and drawing three walks. He scored four runs for UTPA in the game.
The Broncs are now 18-22 on the season while the Islanders fall to 14-23.
