Box Score

Senior Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State) threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Broncs to a 6-0 victory over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday (Apr. 14) at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Mason scattered seven hits over nine innings and only allowed one runner past first base. The Bronc right-hander struck out 11 hitters and didn't issue a walk, facing just 32 batters, five over the minimum. Mason is now 6-3 on the season as he allowed one earned run or less for the fourth straight game.

UTPA opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) drove a double to deep left field, scoring Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) from first base. The Broncs then added two more runs on three hits in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) drove his third home run of the season over the left field fence to tack on another run. The Broncs then plated their last two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) sacrifice fly to center field that drove in one run. An errant relay throw by the Islander shortstop allowed Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) to score on the play as well.

Alamia went 1-for-3 at the plate, beating out a slowly hit ball to shortstop for an infield single, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. He also scored one run. Smith was 1-for-3 on the day, driving in two runs while T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Broncs are now within three games of a .500 record as they stand at 19-22 while the Islanders fall to 14-24. UTPA won all four games this season against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.

The Broncs return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 18) when they travel to Nacogdoches, TX to take on the Stephen F. Austin State Lumberjacks for two midweek games.
