The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team was blanked by Sam Houston State, 7-0, in its regular season finale in Huntsville, TX, on Saturday (Apr. 15).
Senior Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) put up one of the toughest fights of the afternoon as she dropped a three-set decision (4-6, 7-5, 7-6) to Cristina Flores. Sloan teamed up with Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, Frances/Fenelon Sainte Marie) in doubles' action, but the duo was unable to get the Lady Broncs in the win column as they suffered an 8-2 setback to Flores and Emma McDougall.
De Bourqueney dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Irina Sotnikova in the first flight of singles' action while Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) fell to Lata Assudani by a 6-3, 6-2 count in the second flight.
Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) each fell in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 count to Brooke Mills and Lauren Janak, respectively. Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.) also lost a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Bethany Yurkiw in the sixth flight.
The team of Buksik and Garcia were blanked, 8-0, in the first flight of doubles' action by Mills and Peta Taylor while Mabulac and Nanez suffered an 8-3 setback to Janak and Yurkiw.
The Lady Broncs fell to 7-11 on the season while Sam Houston State improved its record to 10-8.
UTPA will be back in action at the National Independent Women's Tennis Tournament in Fort Wayne, IN, on April 21st.
