Box Score
The UTPA Bronc baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Stephen F. Austin State Lumberjacks on Tuesday (Apr. 18) in Nacogdoches, TX.
The Lumberjacks jumped on Bronc starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) in the second inning when Jason Wilson drove a single down the right field line, scoring two runners. Wilson then moved to third base thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch before being driven in on a single by David Jeans. SFASU then added a single run in the third inning and one in the sixth inning.
UTPA got in on the scoring in the top of the seventh inning when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) singled in Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) from third base. Jason Buhagiar (Penngrove, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) scored three batters later on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-2.
In the ninth inning, Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.) led off with a pinch-hit single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, pinch-hitter Joshua Talley (Great Falls, MT/New Mexico J.C.) walked, bringing the tying run to the plate. Buhagiar struck out and Alamia then followed with an infield single to load the bases. T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) singled in to left field to score Powers and close the gap to 5-3. Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) then struck out and Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) flied out to center field to end the game.
Alamia continues to swing a hot bat for the Broncs as he has now hit safely in 18 straight games, four games shy of the program record for consecutive game hitting streak. The senior went 3-for-5 in the game, driving in one run and raising his batting average to .377 for the year.
Gilmer also went 3-for-5 and drove in one run. He was the only Bronc hitter to connect on an extra-base hit with a double to right center field in the first inning. Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) was the only other Bronc to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
Linder lasted 4 1-3 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two. With the loss, his record drops to 1-3 on the season. Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) pitched 2 2-3 innings in relief, allowing five hits and one earned run. Junior Ronnie Morales (Great Falls, MT/Barton County C.C.) pitched the final inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
The loss drops the Broncs to 19-23 on the season and 1-1 against the Lumberjacks. SFASU improves to 8-32.
The two teams will close out their season series on Wednesday (Apr. 19) at 3:00 p.m. in Nacogdoches, TX.
