Box Score

The UTPA baseball team dropped its first game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Friday (Apr. 28) in Conway, SC by a score of 2-0.

Bronc starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) was the hard-luck loser as he allowed one unearned run in the second inning and one in the fourth. The southpaw scattered nine hits over five and two-thirds innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out one and walking one. He is now 1-4 on the season.

The Broncs managed to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning thanks to three singles in a row from Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) and Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) with one out. Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) then struck out and Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) grounded in to a fielder's choice to end the inning.

UTPA only managed to get one more base-runner to third base and that was freshman Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) when he tripled in the ninth inning with two outs.

Catcher Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) was the only Bronc hitter to collect multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-4 at the plate. Garcia was one of just two players in the game with an extra-base hit. CCU's Chris Raber was the other with a double.

Alamia is now just one game shy of the program record for consecutive-game hitting streak as he is now at 21 games. His single in the sixth inning was his only hit as he went 1-for-4. The current program record of 22 straight games is held by Alamia and Joe Hernandez.

This was just the third time this season the Broncs have been shutout in a game. UTPA's record now sits at 20-25 while the Chanticleers improved to 19-22.

UTPA and CCU finish their three-game series on Saturday (Apr. 29) with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. in Conway, SC.
