Men's and Women's Tennis Fall During Weekend Play

The UTPA men's and women's tennis teams both dropped home matches this weekend with the men falling to the University of Texas - Arlington, 7-0, and the women losing to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, 6-1.

The Lady Broncs took on the Islanders on Saturday (Apr. 1) at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center. TAMUCC took the doubles point with the duo of Carmen Abeaboeru/Lauren Schmidt defeating Marine de Bourqueney (Paris, France/Fenelon Sainte Marie) and Elysia Sloan (Duncanville, TX/Duncanville H.S.) 8-4 while Lana Burton/Amanda Brahim took down Jessica Nanez (Hidalgo, TX/Hidalgo H.S.) and Sheila Mabulac (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) 8-2 in the third flight. Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) and Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) won the first flight 8-4.

In singles action, Nanez was the only winner for the Lady Broncs, winning the sixth flight 6-3, 6-3 over Schmidt. De Bourqueney fell in the top flight 6-4, 6-4 to Abeaboeru while Buksik dropped the second flight to Filipa Figueiredo 6-3, 7-5. Mabulac lost a close match in the fourth spot, 6-4, 7-5, 0-1 to Burton while Sloan and Garcia dropped the third and fifth flights respectively.

The Lady Broncs now stand at 4-10 on the season.

For the men, the match started with the Mavericks winning the doubles point. Rehman Esmail (Coquitlam, BC, Canada/North Carolina State) and Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) won the first flight over Sandy Farquharson and Daniel Omana, 8-4. Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School) and Andrew Bost (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) dropped the second flight while Danny Farias (Harlingen, TX/Temple College) and Enrique Montemayor (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) fell in the third flight.

On the singles side, Bost lost a close one to Ian Vazquez 6-4, 7-5 in the fifth flight while Farquharson downed Porter in the top flight 6-3, 6-4. Steil fell 6-2, 6-2 in the second flight and Esmail was beaten 6-4, 6-2 in the third. Montemayor was bested in the fourth flight and Farias dropped the sixth to Niels Buksik 6-4, 6-0.

The men are now 1-11 this season.

Both teams are scheduled to face off against the Texas Southern Tigers on Saturday (Apr. 8) in Edinburg with the men beginning play at 10:00 a.m.
