UTPA Pulls Out 7-6 Victory over Birmingham-Southern

The UTPA baseball team picked up win number 17 on Sunday (Apr. 9) with a 7-6 win over the Birmingham-Southern Panthers at Striplin Field in Birmingham, AL.

The Broncs came out of the gate with a Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) double to left field to lead off the game followed by a T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) bunt single. Alamia then scored on a double-steal as Gilmer was thrown out at second base. Birmingham-Southern then tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

UTPA got on the board again in the seventh with a Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) solo home run to lead off the inning. Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) followed with a double to right center field and then Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) drove a triple over the center fielder's head to score Flores. Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) singled on the very next pitch to give the Broncs a 4-1 lead.

BSC answered with a five run outburst on six hits in the bottom half of the inning to lead 6-4. UTPA bounced right back as Flores smacked a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run that proved to be the game winner.

Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) started the game on the mound for UTPA, pitching six innings and allowing just two earned runs on four hits. Ronnie Morales (Great Falls, MT/Barton County C.C.) picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-1. Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save of the season to become the all-time career leader in saves at UTPA with 14.

Flores was 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs and scoring two. The home run was his second of the season. Smith also went 2-for-4, scoring two and driving in one with the solo home run, his first of the season.

Alamia kept his hitting streak alive as he was 1-for-5 on the day. The streak now sits at 15 games.

The Broncs' record is now 17-22 on the year while Birmingham-Southern falls to 16-14.

UTPA next faces off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the last home games of the year on Thursday (Apr. 13) at 6:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
