Box Score
TCU completed a season sweep of the UTPA baseball team on Sunday (May 14) afternoon with a 5-4 win in Fort Worth, TX.
The Broncs scored first, pushing two runs across in the second inning. Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) led the inning off with a walk and was followed by Joshua Talley (Great Falls, MT/New Mexico J.C.) who reached base on an error by the shortstop. Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt before Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) drove in Smith with a single up the middle. Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix J.C.) then plated Talley with an RBI ground-out to shortstop.
In the third inning, T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) reached base with a lead-off walk and was driven in by the next batter, Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville), who drove a double to right center field. Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) immediately followed with a double to left center that brought Flores across the plate for a 4-0 lead.
Bronc starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) kept TCU off the board until the fourth inning when he allowed a pair of solo home runs, bringing the score to 4-2. The Horned Frogs then tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh thanks to three hits and a Bronc miscue.
With the game tied at 4-4, Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) entered the game in the ninth inning but was unable to keep TCU from scoring the winning run. After retiring the first batter he faced, Haines walked three straight before giving up a single down the left field line to end the game. The loss drops Haines' record to 4-5 on the season.
Linder lasted six innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. The southpaw struck out two and walked one in earning the no-decision.
At the plate, Brooks was 2-for-4 with one run batted in and was the only Bronc hitter with multiple hits in the game. Honeycutt was 1-for-4 with an RBI and stole his first base of the season.
The Broncs are now 23-29 with one game left in the season. TCU upped its record to 31-21 with the victory.
The last game of the season for UTPA is Tuesday (May 16) at Edinburg Baseball Stadium against UTSA with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
