Sophomore closer Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) picked up his 10th save of the year as the Broncs won their last game of the season against the UTSA Roadrunners, 5-4, on Tuesday (May 16) evening.
The Roadrunners took the early lead in the second inning when Michael Rockett drove a home run over the left field wall off Bronc starter Kelly Casares (Houston, TX/McLennan J.C.) to take a 1-0 lead. UTPA then answered in the bottom half of the third when Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) singled to right field, scoring T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) from third. The next batter, Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.) lined a double to the gap in left center field, scoring Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) and Bartosh to give the Broncs a 3-0 lead.
UTSA pulled within one in the fourth on a passed ball, making the score 3-2. The Broncs bounced right back in bottom of the inning thanks to an Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) two-run home run over the left field fence to go up by three. UTSA came back in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits to pull back within one.
In the top of the eighth, the Roadrunners got men on first and third with one out when UTPA brought in Haines from the bullpen. After a stolen base made it second and third with one out, Haines struck out the next two batters to preserve the lead. He then struck out two more in the ninth to earn his 10th save and set a new UTPA single-season save record. He already holds the record for most saves in a career.
Casares picked up his first win of the season, evening his record at 1-1. He threw four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits while walking none and striking out five.
Bartosh enjoyed a 2-for-4 night at the plate, driving in a run and scoring one. Chris Lozano (El Paso, TX/Phoenix J.C.) was the only other Bronc hitter to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Flores drove in two runs with his fourth home run of the season and scored one while Powers also drove in two.
Tuesday's game marked the final game as a Bronc for five seniors, including Powers, Casares, Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.), Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State) and Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.).
The Broncs finish the 2006 season with a 24-29 record.
