The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team picked up its 22nd win of the season on Tuesday (May 2), defeating the Texas Southern Tigers by a score of 10-1 in Houston, TX.
Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one unearned run to three hits to pick up the win. He struck out six hitters and walked four to improve his record to 3-5.
The Broncs got on the board in the top of the second inning when Chris Lozano (El Pa so, TX/Phoenix College) hit a ground ball to second base, scoring Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) from third base. In the third inning, UTPA scored three runs on just one hit with no TSU errors. The Broncs made use of four walks and one hit batter in the inning.
In the fourth, Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) drove in T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) with a fly ball to right field to make the score 5-0. TSU got a run in the fifth inning when the Broncs committed an error. UTPA added a pair of runs in the sixth on a Smith double to right field and a Joshua Talley (Great Falls, MT/New Mexico J.C.) single to left field, making the score 7-1.
The Broncs added two runs in the eighth on a Talley home run to center field, his first of the season. The last UTPA run came on a sacrifice fly from Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), plating Lozano from third.
In addition to his home run, Talley had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate while walking once and reaching base after being hit by a pitch. He drove in three runs and scored one for the Broncs. Smith and Gilmer both scored three runs. Gilmer was 2-for-5 and stole three bases.
Alamia failed to hit safely for the first time in 24 games, putting an end to his record-setting streak of 23 games.
The Broncs improved their record to 22-26 on the season while TSU fell to 15-30.
The two teams conclude their two-game series on Wednesday (May 3) in Houston, TX at 12:00 p.m.
