The UTPA diamondmen used a pair of home runs and a strong mound performance by Ricky Ibarz (Caracas, Venezuela/New Mexico J.C.) to conclude a two-game sweep against Texas Southern by a 5-2 count on Wednesday (May 3) at McGregor Park in Houston, TX.

The Tigers struck first in the bottom half of the opening frame when Texas Southern collected three consecutive base knocks that led to a run when Ulysis Starling scored from third bases following a double-play ball from Herman Coachman.

The Broncs would responded in the top half of the second inning when Josh Talley (Great Falls, MT/New Mexico J.C.) walked then advanced to second on a single by Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.). Following a passed ball, Talley and Garcia each advanced one base. Brady Honeycutt (Rosebudd, TX/Rosebudd-Lott H.S.) would drive in UTPA's first run of the game when grounded out to shortstop allowing Talley to score from third.

In the top half of the third inning, the Broncs used a pair of home runs to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) started things off for UTPA as he connected on a solo home then Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) collected a two-run dinger a couple of batters later.

Texas Southern responded with a single run in the sixth inning, but UTPA would match them in the seventh when T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) scored on a passed ball after reaching base by a walk to open the frame.

Ibarz limited the Tigers' offense as he hurled six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while sitting down five hitters. The trio of Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.), Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McLennan J.C.) and Stephen Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) combined to throw three innings while giving up only three hits.

Talley finished the game with a team-high two hits while Smith drove in two runs for the Broncs.

UTPA improved his record to 23-26 on the season while Texas Southern fell to 15-31.
