The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program posted its first victory of the season against North Texas before falling to Wyoming in its final match of the Texas State CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier on Saturday (Aug. 26) in San Marcos, TX.
UTPA 3, North Texas 1 (30-28, 26-30, 30-26, 30-27)
The Lady Broncs posted their first victory of the season with a four-set triumph over the University of North Texas in their first match of the morning on Saturday.
UTPA senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) posted her second double-double (kills-digs) in three matches with a 24-kill, 13-dig performance en route to finishing the contest with a .333 hitting percentage. Bravo was the offensive leader for the Lady Broncs, who tallied 66 kills in the match compared to 47 at the hands of the Mean Green.
Monique Schaal (Filer, ID/College of Southern Idaho) gave the Lady Broncs a boost offensively against North Texas as she added 15 kills, and Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) collected her second double-double (kills-digs) of the Texas State CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier after she finished the match with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out 54 assists and collected 12 digs in the match while Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) each notched 20 digs to guide the Lady Broncs defensively. UTPA finished the match with advantages over the Mean Green in kills (66-47), assists (65-44) and digs (85-68).
The Lady Broncs captured their first game of the season in the first set by a 30-28 margin before dropping the second frame by a 30-26 score. In the final two games, the Lady Broncs put together their best offensive performances as they finished with a hitting percentage of .261 (18-6-46) in the third game and .317 (19-6-41) in the fourth and final set.
The Mean Green were unable to take advantage of their dominance at the net as the UNT blockers combined for 14.0 total blocks compared to 5.0 blocks for the Lady Broncs. North Texas struggled offensively against UTPA as the Mean Green finished with a .083 hitting percentage during their match.
Brittney Gregory finished with 16 kills, 12 digs and four blocks in the match while Ashley Bass collected 42 assists and four service aces.
The Lady Broncs bumped up their record to 1-2 on the season while the Mean Green dropped to 0-3 during the 2006 campaign.
Wyoming 3, UTPA 1 (30-23, 30-23, 23-30, 30-23)
After posting their first victory of the season, the Lady Broncs were unable to carry the momentum into the second match on Saturday as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Wyoming Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls came out of the gates strong as they won the first two games by a pair of 30-23 contests and recorded a .435 hitting percentage as a team during the first frame of the match. The Lady Broncs were able to pick up the third game by a 30-23 score, but were unable to get the best of the Cowgirls as they dropped the fourth and final game by a 30-23 margin.
Annie Meyers posted a match-high 21 kills and finished with a .327 hitting percentage to go along with 16 digs and two blocks. Rachel Smith added a double-double (kills-digs) with a 17-kill, 13-dig performance, and Lauren Scott added 13 kills for the Cowgirls, who held a 69-52 advantage over the Lady Broncs in the kills' category.
Bravo notched her second consecutive 20-plus kill performance of the day as she finished with a team-high 20 kills, and Phillips also added 14 kills for the Lady Broncs. Blakely quarterbacked the offense as she dished out 45 assists, and Lyons led the way defensively with 25 digs.
The University of Wyoming improved its record to 2-1 on the season while the Lady Broncs fell to 1-3 at the Texas State CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier.
The Lady Broncs will return to the court on Friday (Sept. 1) for the home opener of the UTPA Women's Volleyball Invitational against Texas State with match time set for 7:00 p.m.
