The UTPA women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Texas State in its home opener and the opening match of the UTPA Women's Volleyball Invitational on Friday (Sept. 1) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Texas State captured the first two sets by scores of 30-24 and 30-26 in which the Bobcats finished with a hitting percentage of .340 or higher en route to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Lady Broncs came back from a pair of five-point deficits en route to winning a dramatic come-from-behind set by a score of 32-30. The Lady Broncs' defense truly stepped up in that frame as they held the Bobcats to a .122 hitting percentage.
The Lady Broncs couldn't repeat the same magic in the fourth and final set as they fell by a score of 32-30. UTPA had its chances to take the game from the Bobcats, but a costly red card with the score tied at 30-30 gave Texas State a one-point advantage at 31-30. The Lady Broncs ended up dropping the next point, which gave Texas State both the set and match.
Lawrencia Brown led the Texas State with a match-high 24 kills to go along with a .365 hitting percentage a she committed five errors in 52 total attacks. The Bobcats held a 70-64 advantage over the Lady Broncs in the kills' category and finished with a .278 total team hitting percentage.
Christina Melvin notched a double-double (assists-digs) with a 42-assist, 11-dig performance, and Kacee Wimpy added a match-high 22 digs for the Bobcats. Texas State held an 83-74 advantage over the Lady Broncs in digs as well as a 7.0-5.0 margin in total blocks, which was highlighted by four block assists by the Emily Jones.
Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) finished with her third double-double (kills-digs) of the season with a team-high 19-kill, 17-dig performance. The Lady Bronc outside hitter is 14 kills and eight digs shy of becoming the second player in UTPA women's volleyball history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
UTPA setter Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted her second 50-plus assist performance of the season as she finished with a match-high 52 assists. She also recorded her third double-double (assists-digs) of the season as she notched 10 digs in the match.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) posted her third double-double (kills-digs) of the season as she finished with 16 kills and 15 digs in the match. Monique Schaal (Filer, ID/College of Southern Idaho) posted a solid night in the middle blocking spot as she collected 13 kills, including a .273 hitting percentage, for the Lady Broncs.
Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added a team-high 18 digs, and April Young (Boise, ID/Capital H.S.) and Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) each added six kills a piece for the Lady Broncs.
UTPA, who fell to 1-4 on the season, will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 2) when the Lady Broncs square-off against Texas Tech at the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
