The UTPA women's volleyball team returned to its winning ways as the Lady Broncs snapped a three-match losing skid with a straight-sets victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, TX, on Tuesday (Sept. 26).
The Lady Broncs went through a hard-fought battle in each of the three frames with the Javelinas, but none were more intense than the first game where UTPA squeezed out a 32-30 victory to take a 1-0 lead. In the second frame, the Lady Broncs distanced themselves early in the contest to come away with a 30-21 then closed out the match in the third and final set with a 30-25 victory.
Sophomore Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) posted her eighth double-double (kills-digs) of the season following a 10-kill, 10-dig performance and collected her 13th double-digit kill performance of the 2006 campaign.
Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) was the Lady Broncs' top offensive threat in the contest as the UTPA senior collected a match-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs against Javelinas.
Setter Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) quarterbacked the UTPA offense with 32 assists to go along with eight digs in the contest while Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) was a stalwart on the backline for the Lady Broncs as she finished with 10 digs.
Monique Schaal (Twins Falls, ID/College of Southern Idaho) added eight kills to go along with a .238 hitting percentage, and Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) notched six kills and a block against the Javelinas.
The Lady Broncs posted top marks in kills (45-43), hitting percentage (.171-.170), total attacks (129-112) and assists (38-37) in their victory on the road over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Lady Broncs will return to the Rio Grande Valley for a pair of matches this weekend against North Dakota State (Sept. 29) and Utah Valley State (Sept. 30). Both matches will be held at McAllen Memorial High School and are slated for 7:00 p.m.
