The UTPA women's volleyball team battled from the opening serve to the final kill, but the Lady Broncs failed to pick up the victory as they suffered a straight-set setback at the hands of Utah Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 30) at McAllen Memorial High School.
A couple of points separated the Lady Broncs and Wolverines in each of the three matches, but Utah Valley State came away with triumphs of 30-28, 30-27 and 34-32 en route to improving its record to 11-7 on the season.
Camie Manwill posted a double-double (kills-digs) for the Wolverines as the UVSC sophomore collected 10 kills and a match-high 21 digs in the contest. Lacee Koelliker dished out a match-high 41 assists to go along with 10 digs for Utah Valley State.
Jessica Endres was the top offensive threat for the Wolverines as the senior notched 16 kills, nine digs and five blocks in the winner's cause, and Chelsea Baugh also played a big part for UVSC as the defensive specialist recorded 16 digs.
Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) found her way all over the court on Saturday evening as she collected 10 kills to go along with a team-high 19 digs while Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) added a double-double (kills-assists) with 32 assists and 13 digs for the Lady Broncs.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) nearly missed out on a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs in the contest while Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) collected 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 6) and Saturday (Oct. 7) at the UTPA Fieldhouse against Independent-foe South Dakota State. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. on both days.
