Box Score
Senior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with a match-high 16 kills in UTPA's 3-1 setback to Texas A&M-International on Monday (Sept. 4) in Laredo, TX, but those stats became only a small part of a masterpiece career for the UTPA outside hitter.
Heading into the match with the Dustdevils, Bravo stood her ground at 997 kills and 997 digs for her career, and after her performance on Monday evening, she became the second player in UTPA history to eclipse the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig mark. The UTPA senior joined Jaclyn Muszynski as the only two players in Lady Broncs' history to post over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in their careers.
While Bravo's performance stood out for UTPA, the Lady Broncs didn't have much more to celebrate on the Labor Day Holiday as they dropped a four-set decision to the home-squad Texas A&M-International.
The Lady Broncs started off the match in solid form as they disposed of the Dustdevils easily in the first frame by a 30-22 score. As a team, UTPA finished with a .351 hitting percentage in the match after the Lady Broncs posted 15 kills in 37 total attacks with a mere two miscues. The UTPA defense put together a tremendous performance in that first set as the Dustdevils recorded a .000 hitting performance.
Texas A&M-International hit its offensive switch after the first frame as the Dustdevils rallied to take the next three sets from the Lady Broncs by margins of 30-21, 30-27 and 30-18. While the Dustdevils got stronger with every passing match, the UTPA offense seemed to get weaker as the Lady Broncs tallied hitting percentages of .206, .132 and .061 in the final three games.
Eliza Cezario led Texas A&M-International with 15 kills as she notched a .393 hitting percentage and was one of four players to post double-digits in the kills' category for the Dustdevils.
Michelle Castaneda collected a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs while Juliana Gusmao and Nicole Gipson recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Desiree Arredondo dished out a team-high 42 assists in the match while Genevieve Trevino notched a match-high 24 digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) posted her fourth double-double (assists-digs) of the season with a 43-assist, 16-dig performance, and Monique Schaal (Filer, ID/College of Southern Idaho) added 11 kills and eight digs. Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) picked up a team-high 17 digs on the defensive side for the Lady Broncs.
The Lady Broncs dropped their record to 1-6 on the season while Texas A&M-International improved to 3-1 during the 2006 campaign.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 8) in Portland, OR, for the University of Portland Tournament.
