Lady Broncs Suffer Road Setback to ORU

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team suffered a setback when the Lady Broncs fell to Oral Roberts University by a score of 68-47 in Tulsa, OK, on Friday (Jan. 19).

The Lady Broncs fall to 8-12 on the season while the victory improves the Golden Eagles to 11-7.

The Golden Eagles quickly went to work on the Lady Broncs, jumping out to an 18-2 lead with 12:04 left to play in the first half. ORU used a balanced attack to gain the early advantage as five different players scored on the opening run.

The Lady Broncs finally broke into double digits on the scoreboard when Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) connected on a jumper to make the score 24-10 with 5:33 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Lady Broncs shot better as the half came to an end, but still headed to the locker room down by a score of 33-15.

UTPA shot just 35.3 percent on 6-of-17 shooting while ORU connected on 12-of-27 from the field to shoot 44.4 percent in the first half. The Golden Eagles collected 18 rebounds to the Lady Broncs' 11 boards.

The second half belonged to ORU's Elisha Turek, who scored 20 of the team's 35 points in the second half. Turek ended with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting while also adding eight rebounds and four steals in 29 minutes of action.

The Lady Broncs closed the Golden Eagles' lead to 10 points when Tiona Wilson (Bradenton, FL/Southeast H.S.) hit a three-point basket with 11:52 remaining in the contest, but Turek took over, scoring the next seven points to increase the ORU lead to 16.

UTPA failed to have a single player score in double digits, but were led by newcomer LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.), who finished with nine points on 3-of-16 shooting while adding four rebounds in 37 minutes on the court.

Senior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) had a team-high eight rebounds, adding four points on 2-of-4 shooting in 40 minutes of play.

As a team, the Lady Broncs shot 38 percent on 19-of-50 from the field while the Golden Eagles shot 46.2 percent on 24-of-52 shooting. ORU dominated the boards, out-rebounding UTPA 42-23 on the evening.

The Lady Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse for their next contest when they face North Dakota State University in their second United Basketball League game of the season on Thursday (Jan. 25) with tip-time set for 7:00 p.m.
