The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team dropped its record to 0-4 on the young season with a 6-1 setback to Lamar in El Paso, TX, on Sunday (Jan. 28).
UTPA junior Giana Oliveira (Santa Anna, Brazil/Eckerd College) was the lone Lady Bronc to capture a singles' match as she defeated Tanya Roberts by a 7-6 (3), 6-3 decision in the number-two position.
Oliveira proved to be a two-time winner against the Cardinals as she teamed with former Eckerd College teammate Julia Cirne-Lima (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Eckerd College) en route to securing an 8-4 triumph in the number-one doubles' competition over Lamar's Kaltrina Harbuzi and Roberts.
The Lady Broncs suffered five setbacks in singles' action as Cirne-Lima dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Harbuzi in the number-one position. Stephanie Willerding (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) fell to Maria Gutierrez by a 6-3 and 6-2 decision in the number-three position while former prep teammate Megan Bedeau (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Pamela Martinez in the number-four spot.
Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Waiblingen-Salier Gymnasium) fell to Manijee Ashrafi by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 in the number-five position, and Sarah Burton (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Oakville Trafalgar H.S.) dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Manami Kuroda in the sixth and final position in the singles' action.
In doubles' action, Willerding and Garcia fell to Ashrafi and Martinez by an 8-4 decision in the number-two position while Bedeau and Buksik dropped an 8-3 match to Gutierrez and Kuroda.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action this weekend for a trio of matches in Abilene, TX, where they will open up competition Abilene Christian on Friday (Feb. 2).
