The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program recorded a straight-set victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its home opener at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Tuesday (Oct. 9).
The Lady Broncs opened up the first frame with a strong offensive performance with a 30-28 victory followed by a 30-21 triumph in the second set. With the Lady Broncs up by a 2-0 margin heading into the third and decisive frame, the Valley's overcame a late deficit and rallied to capture a 30-27 victory to notch their first home victory of the season.
Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 12 kills to go along with a .667 hitting percentage with two errors in 15 total attacks while contributing with 5.0 total blocks.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 16 digs while Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) notched 12 kills and eight digs to aid the Lady Broncs.
Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led the Lady Broncs defensively with a match-high 25 digs while Ytszel Trinidad (Mercedes, TX/Mercedes H.S.) added nine digs.
Molly McCabe collected a double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs while four Islanders finished with a team-high six kills.
The Lady Broncs improved their overall record to 8-14 on the 2007 campaign while the Islanders dropped to 4-14 in the season standings.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 13) in Birmingham, AL, where the Valley's team will square-off against Birmingham-Southern and Fisk University.
